9-year-old wins fight to overturn snowball ban

A 9-year-old boy has convinced the leaders of Severance, Colorado to overturn a almost century-old ban on snowball fights - leaving his little brother to be quick on his toes as the first legal target.

Dane's mother, Brooke Best, told The Greeley Tribune her son had been talking about snowballs since he found out about a month-and-a-half ago that it was illegal to throw them within town limits.

"The children of Severance want the opportunity to have a snowball fight like the rest of the world", Dane told town council members on Monday, according to The Greeley Tribune.

Dane Best, 9, appeared before the Severance, Colorado town hall to change an outdated law about throwing snowballs. "Because his grandpa couldn't".

The rule, which town officials think had been around since the town's 1920 founding, is part of an ordinance that strictly forbid people from shooting or throwing missiles or stones at people, animals, trees or property.

"He wanted to throw it at his little brother, but the mayor said, 'For the first snowball, let's throw it in a grassy area, ' so he tossed it out there", said Brooke Best.

Dane began writing letters with his classmates in support of overturning the ban and even circulated a petition.

"Kids need a reason to play outside", he told the Board.

Kyle Rietkerk, assistant to the Severance town administrator, told the newspaper kids visiting Severance Town Hall on school field trips were always shocked to learn that it is illegal to throw a snowball.

Dane Best of Severance, Colorado made his argument at a meeting of the town board Monday night, leading the members to unanimously lift the ban.

For almost 100 years, the winter pastime has been illegal in the northern Colorado town, but thanks to Best's efforts, that law is history.

And after Monday night's success, his four-year-old brother Dax had better watch out.

'Can we amend this ordinance to say that if you're over 60, no one can throw a snowball at you?' asked Trustee Dennis Kane. He then presented his case to the town council at their regular meeting.

I'm sure I'm not the only who is a little disappointed that the Best brothers didn't immediately take those snowballs and whip them directly into the collective mushes of the Severance Town Board. So Dane plans to launch a campaign on behalf of his (illegal) pet guinea pig.
