Russia launches first manned voyage to ISS since rocket accident

Astronauts manned spacecraft "Soyuz MS-11" successfully passed the Board of the worldwide space station after leak checks of the docking and equalization of pressure between the ship and the station.

Soyuz-FG carrier rocket with a manned Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome to the International Space Station (ISS) on October 11. Arrived at the station the members of the expedition MKS-58/59 Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronauts and the Canadian space Agency Anne McClain and David Saint-Jacques.

The Soyuz MS-11 docked to the ISS in the automatic mode at 22:38 Moscow time after a six-hour orbital flight. The spacecraft made four orbits over six hours as it chased down the space station for the docking.

The three astronauts onboard Russia's Soyuz rocket have safely reached the International Space Station. Until December 20, the new ISS crew will perform a large number of experiments that will return to Earth the crew of Sergey Prokopyeva.

They'll stay aboard the space station for about 6.5 months performing science and learning how to live in space. Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine meanwhile thanked the USA and Russian teams "for their dedication to making this launch a success".

Canadian David Saint-Jacques reaches the International Space Station

Kononenko, McClain and Saint-Jacques smiled and gave thumbs up to the cheering crowd including relatives as they ascended into the Soyuz capsule on Monday morning.

The Soyuz is the only means of reaching the ISS since the United States retired the space shuttle in 2011.

The three current inhabitants - Alexander Gerst of Germany, Serena Auñón-Chancellor of the United States and Sergey Prokopyev of Russian Federation - plan to return December 20 aboard a Soyuz module that has been docked to the station since June.

A Soyuz-FG rocket carrying NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos' Alexei Ovchinin failed two minutes into its flight on October 11, activating an automatic rescue system that sent their capsule into a steep ride back to Earth. The failure was later attributed to a sensor that was damaged during the rocket's final assembly.

Saint-Jacques and McClain will fly for the first time, while Kononenko has already logged 533 days in space and this trip will be his fourth mission. On Oct. 11, a Soyuz rocket carrying two astronauts - one American and one Russian - malfunctioned, forcing the crew to abort the mission.
