Civilisations and natural world on brink of collapse, David Attenborough warns

UN conference on climate change opens

He will deliver comments from members of the public to world leaders who are attending the conference.

The comments came at the beginning of a two-week climate conference in Katowice, Poland, where emissaries from almost 200 nations are meeting to determine how the world can dramatically scale back greenhouse gas emissions to abide by the landmark Paris climate agreement and, by doing so, stave off the worst effects of climate change.

"Even as we witness devastating climate impacts causing havoc across the world, we are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough, to prevent irreversible and catastrophic climate disruption", Guterres told delegates from nearly 200 countries who gathered in the city of Katowice.

But even as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for action Monday in Poland, telling gathered delegates that "we are in deep trouble with climate change", the United States has been emphasizing its rejection of the Paris agreement and global consensus.

The 92-year-old famed British naturalist and BBC presenter blamed humans for the, "disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years".

Speaking directly to the leaders of the world, at what is being described as the most important climate change meeting since the 2015 Paris agreement, the English broadcaster said action must be taken before it is too late.

Net zero emissions mean any greenhouse gases emitted need to be soaked up by forest or new technologies that can remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Scientists say the only way to keep average global temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 F) by the end of the century is to phase out the use of fossil fuels by 2050.

Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch are equally risky in their conditions. "Our bowlers know what they have to do". Only England opposite Joe Root has scored more runs - 80 more - but has spent 16 more innings at the crease.

Guterres asked governments to find ways to replace fossil fuels - which contribute about 65 per cent of global greenhouse gases, according to the EPA - with cleaner alternatives. Poland is heavily dependent on coal, which accounts for some 80 percent of all the nation's energy, the Associated Press noted.

Guterres said governments should embrace the opportunities rather than cling to fossil fuels such as coal, a dig at hosts Poland. "I think conservationists have to be careful in saying things are catastrophic when, in fact, they are less than catastrophic", he told The Independent in 2006. "It's very sad, but if they don't do anything right now that is the truth". "We need more action and more ambition", Guterres said.

"Or, God forbid, [we] ignore the irrefutable evidence and become the generation that betrayed humanity", Bainimarama said.

TRT World's Assed Baig reports.

A string of major climate reports have cast doubt over the entire process to avert runaway global warming, suggesting the Paris goals fall well short of what is needed.

Four former leaders of United Nations talks, including Laurent Fabius of France, who led negotiations for the Paris agreement, issued a statement urging immediate action.

Calling Trump "meshugge" - Yiddish for "crazy" - for deciding to withdraw from the Paris accord, Schwarzenegger insisted that the climate deal has widespread support at local and state levels in the U.S.

At his address at the climate talks yesterday, Mr Attenborough said: "The people have spoken: leaders of the world, you must lead, the continuation of our civilisations and the natural world upon which we depend are in your hands".
