Saudi-led coalition reportedly orders halt in assault on Yemen's Hodeidah

The UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths will brief the Security Councile

Yemen's internationally-backed government and Saudi Arabia have repeatedly accused the Houthi rebels of using Hodeidah's port to smuggle in Iranian weapons.

The decision comes as key Western allies called for a ceasefire ahead of renewed UN-led peace efforts to end more than three years of war that have pushed Yemen to the brink of starvation.

TRT World's Rahul Radhakrishnan explains how the war in Yemen created division in the country's military.

On Thursday, Yemen's president Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi said he would support the UN-proposed peace talks, but at the same time vowed to "liberate" the battleground rebel-held Hodeida regardless of the peace process.

As global concern rises over Yemen's fate, is progress finally being made toward peace?

David Beasley, its executive director, and Mark Lowcock, the UN's humanitarian chief, will also deliver reports amid a new push for talks.

"What has been going on in Hodeidah was that the coalition forces are preparing for a further military escalation", al-Shami noted.

After 12 days of clashes, Hodeidah was "quiet" and its port was "operating", Gargash tweeted.

"This shows that the humanitarian aid that comes to Yemen does not reach people who really need it. Distribution remains random", said his doctor, Amen al-Asli.

A commander of the elite troops told Xinhua that the fighting "will continue until the entire province of Hodeidah is liberated".

Burnt out cars were seen on the streets of the city, whose port serves as a key lifeline to the impoverished country.

A military official had earlier told AFP that pro-government forces had suspended their offensive into the city to allow safe passage for civilians, humanitarian staff, and the wounded.

"My heart is breaking after what I saw at the hospital in Hodeidah", said Beasley.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said about 445,000 people have fled Hodeidah province since June.

His death sparked a global outcry and exposed Saudi Arabia's crackdown on dissent and aggressive foreign policy, including its role in the war in Yemen, which human rights groups and USA lawmakers have criticized.
