Rebel Wilson's defamation payout reduced by 90%

Wilson said on Twitter she was glad the matter was at an end.

Wilson's lawyers on Friday sought leave to appeal against the reduction in the High Court - Australia's highest judicial body - but the application was refused.

Actress Rebel Wilson has lost her final bid to reclaim a record payout in Australia, despite winning a high-profile defamation case.

Wilson's barristers, Matthew Collins QC and Renee Enbom, had sought special leave to appeal at the court after she was forced to repay nearly 90 per cent of her record $4.7 million payout to the Woman's Day publisher that defamed her. I am proud of this victory and all of the hard fight!

The star of three "Pitch Perfect" movies and "Bridesmaids" won A$4.6 million ($3.5 million) in damages from the German publisher a year ago after a court found a series of articles accusing her of lying about her age, name and childhood events had cost her roles.

But Bauer successfully appealed the dollar figure in June, with the Court of Appeal finding there was no basis for Wilson to be awarded damages for the potential loss of roles.

After a brief adjournment, the High Court made a decision to refuse the special leave application, with costs.

"Bauer Media is invested in its Australian business now more than ever", Bauer chief executive Paul Dykzeul said in a statement.

"In our opinion there are insufficient prospects that an appeal will succeed", Justice Virginia Bell said.

Wilson, meanwhile, has said that the past few years have been a "long journey" through the Australian courts.

Wilson said the whole reason for bringing her case is that she "really wanted to stand up to a bully".

The ABC reports that Wilson sat in the front row of the public gallery during the hearing, before calling it a "definitive end to the case" outside the court after the proceedings.

'This was a company that behaved very badly, were proven guilty of malicious defamation, but, at the end of the day, the jury restored my reputation. "It was about standing up to a bully, and I've done that so successfully".
