Meet the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla

The Hybrid models will be introduced in more than 90 countries

Needless to say, the overall look of the 2020 Corolla is more dynamic than that of the current slab-sided sedan. The model's design concept is called 'Shooting Robust, ' which Toyota says emphasizes a lower stance and center of gravity.

Following the reveal of a redesigned Corolla Hatchback at the start of the year, Toyota has now followed up with the reveal of a redesigned Corolla sedan. The larger engine is shared with the 2019 Corolla hatchback, a redesigned model that went on sale earlier this year. And the driver's seating position has been moved nearly an inch lower and 1.57-inches farther rearward, adjustments said to improve both comfort and the car's weight distribution. The China Corolla measures in at 4,640 mm long, 1,780 mm wide and 1,435 mm tall, making it 10 mm longer, five mm wider and 45 mm shorter than the old vehicle.

It certainly looks sportier and more aggressive than the old Corolla. A 4.2-inch screen is standard in the instrument cluster but a 7.0-inch screen is offered as an alternative. The cabin is also said to be quieter, owing to extensive use of sound-deadening materials. The Chinese-spec model will get an on-board Data Communication Module, one of the features under the Toyota Connected suite, as standard. Whether the vehicle we get in Australia will have the same snout, or whether we'll get a version with a nose adapted from the hatchback, remains to be seen.

Honda Passport to debut at LA auto show
In a few weeks, Honda will resurrect the Passport name for a new utility vehicle positioned between the CR-V and Pilot . The sizing pegs it squarely as a rival to the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and soon-to-launch Chevrolet Blazer .

The base Corolla L features a 7.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment with Apple CarPlay and a built-in wi-fi hotspot, while other trims have an upsized 8.0-inch version of the touchscreen with Amazon Alexa compatibility. The independent multilink setup in the rear that replaces the previous sedan's torsion beam aims to provide much improved ride quality and and handling. For the U.S. market, the new Corolla carries forward the 1.8-litre petrol engine offered in its predecessor, though with a change in tuning. The front MacPherson strut layout has also been totally revised for this platform, and newly-developed shock absorbers also make their way on to the vehicle.

The tale of two Corolla sedans extends to their styling. The American Corolla sedan will also come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 fitted as standard. We are looking at the elegantly designed "Prestige" variant, and there's a "Sporty" variant too, which, in China, is sold as a separate model (all-new Toyota Levin). In the USA -spec version, for instance, customers will have the option to go for an upgraded version of the old model's 1.8-litre petrol engine and an all-new 2.0-litre Dynamic Force petrol engine, also based on TNGA.

Regardless of transmission, every Corolla comes standard with active safety features such as a pre-collision warning system with automatic front braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Wheel sizes offered for the auto will range from 16- to 18-inch units. In Japan, sales of the new sedan and wagon models has also been slated for sometime within 2019.
