Hulu Wants to Build Its Own George R.R

Now a small screen project based on one of his series, Wild Cards has attracted new interest, with U.S. streaming service Hulu commissioning not one, but two shows based on it.

Variety reports that Hulu is opening a writer's room for two series based on Martin's Wild Cards, a collection of sci-fi novels and anthologies that take place in an alternative American timeline in which an alien virus released in 1946 has devastated humanity. But that's just one of the author's universes. It's set in an alternative 1946 NY hit by an alien virus that kills most of those it touches. Of those infected, 90% die horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% become twisted and deformed into "Jokers", while a lucky 1% are blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and become known as "Aces". Now, after decades of sociological turmoil, having been worshipped, oppressed, exploited and ignored...

The virus itself is called the "Wild Card Virus", because it is passed down over generations and can pop up at any time, sometimes triggered by traumatic events. The most recent entries, Low Chicago and Texas Hold'Em, were both released in 2018. Universal Cable Productions will produce along with Hulu, with Andrew Miller set to write and executive produce both projects.

George R.R. Martin's popular Wild Cards book series is getting closer to the small screen.

The series-which, amazingly, began as a two-year long campaign in the Superworld RPG between Martin and a host of other writers-has been going on since 1987's Wild Cards, which featured 22 original short stories.
