World leaders in Paris warn world peace under threat

US President Donald Trump is welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron as he arrives for bilateral talks at the Elysee Palace in Paris

In France, it was Mr. Trump's affront to liberal elites and globalism that kept the political atmosphere charged.

Elsewhere, ceremonies in New Zealand, Australia, India, Hong Kong and Myanmar began a day of remembrance services around the world for a conflict that involved millions of troops from colonised countries in Asia and Africa. That is a risk for a leader who may need their cooperation as he confronts China in a trade war and Iran over its foreign and nuclear policies.

It also underlined growing concerns over the reliability of United States security guarantees under Mr Trump, and his wider commitment to a postwar global order the United States was largely responsible for building and has benefited from, including economically.

Last month Trump sparked concerns globally when he said he would ditch the INF pact.

The ceremony, held at the Arc de Triomphe, honours the almost 10 million soldiers killed during the 1914-'18 war.

On Sunday, he and first lady Melania Trump travelled separately from most of the other presidents and dignitaries attending the event, who had gathered earlier at the Elysee Palace and travelled to the ceremony by bus.

Macron, during a visit to the World War One Western Front at Verdun, told Europe 1 radio that in face of a revived threat from Moscow that Europe needed to "defend itself better alone" and Europeans can not protect themselves without a "true European army". Trump's eagerness to get along with the Russian leader - in spite of Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and numerous other aggressive moves in recent years - has alarmed those who view Russia as a growing threat.

The pair are in Paris, France, to mark 100 years since the armistice that ended World War I.

Trump thanked Macron in a tweet for the "beautiful ceremony" before heading to the USA military cemetery at Suresnes, west of Paris to pay tribute to America's war dead.

Following the Arc de Triomphe ceremony, Trump is expected to deliver remarks from Suresnes, an American cemetery just outside Paris.

The colonel had been paid €300,000 (£261,000; $341,000) for his services, media reports say. Russian Federation had in turn summoned the Austrian ambassador, reports said.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism", Macron stated, adding, "Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism".

The two both attended a lunch Macron hosted for world leaders following Sunday's ceremony.

"We had a regular discussion this morning and he confirmed in front of the press that he was ok", Macron told CNN.

Macron is hosting a Peace Forum starting Sunday, but Trump is planning to leave for Washington and won't attend.

The Veterans Day speech came a day after Trump was criticized for failing to visit a different American cemetery about 60 miles (100 kilometers) outside of Paris on Saturday because rain grounded the helicopter he had planned to take.

Trudeau, who is on a 10-day trip across Europe and Asia, will come face-to-face with three of the nations sowing tension: Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House's decision on Saturday to scrap the president's visit to a cemetery for fallen American soldiers due to weather is creating a bit of a storm of its own.

In a 20-minute address delivered beside the tomb of the unknown soldier, Macron described the "unimaginable hell" of those who fought in the trenches, denouncing the nationalism that fanned the flames of war and now shows signs of resurgence.

Expectations have been growing for a new Trump-Putin meeting as tensions pile up over the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) and United States sanctions against Moscow.

On another matter, Trump praised a 13-year-old US boy who traveled to Paris to attend the ceremony.
