Knife rampage terror attack in Melbourne

Videos posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed a man repeatedly swinging an object at two police officers

An attacker who stabbed a man to death in Melbourne, Australia, has died after being shot by police in what authorities are calling a terrorist attack.

Australian police on Friday said a deadly knife attack in Melbourne was an act of terror, revealing that the deceased suspect was originally from Somalia and was known to intelligence agencies.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton says the Somalian-born Khalif, also known as Hassan Shire, was the brother of a man arrested by police late a year ago in relation to committing acts in preparation for a terrorist attack. The Australian police apprehended a suspect near a burning vehicle.

Premier Daniel Andrews condemned the incident as "an evil and awful thing", thanking the police and citizens who responded and adding "as a city, will not be defined by this act of evil - we are bigger and stronger than this".

ISIS claimed responsibility for the knife attack through its media wing Amaq, the SITE Intelligence Group reported.

The attack occurred on the eve of a busy weekend in Melbourne, with a major horse race scheduled for Saturday and a national league football match the following day. "One of the officers fired his firearm and shot the offender once in the chest". One of the officers shot him in the chest, Ashton said.

Police said they knew the identify of the suspect but declined to name him due to "operational reasons".

Khalif had planned to cause an explosion in Melbourne by igniting gas cylinders in his vehicle, police say. The police there issue a statement saying that a vehicle had burst into flames and that a small number of people were being treated for stab wounds. He died in hospital. Two were being treated for their injuries.

Victoria state police said counter-terrorism investigators were searching two properties in suburban Melbourne on Saturday morning in connection with the attack, but there was no immediate word on what the searches yielded.

The incident took place in Melbourne's Central Business District on Friday afternoon when people would have been leaving work.

Witnesses have described hearing a loud bang during the incident.

Video posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed the man swinging a knife at two police officers, while his truck burned in the background.

Victoria police tweeted a request for witnesses to speak to police and share any images that might help the investigation.
