Macron's DESPERATE attempt to revive bromance with Donald Trump with 'touching' welcome

Donald and Melania Trump board Air Force One for France

Trump had been scheduled to visit a different American cemetery outside Paris on Saturday, but rain grounded the helicopter Trump had planned to take so he cancelled the trip.

A wall of world leaders walked somberly through the centre of Paris today, turning the annual November 11 ceremony in the French capital into a global reminder of the horrors of the First World War and the efforts to prevent it from happening again. Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!'

Macron later said his call for greater European autonomy on defence was not intended as a snub towards the United States and backed Trump's calls for EU members to boost their defence spending.

French President Emmanuel Macron is joined by an array of leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

An American delegation led by Chief of Staff General John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford did visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial under gray skies and drizzle, paying respect to the almost 2,300 war dead buried there.

David Frum, a former speechwriter for former president George W. Bush, tweeted that a presidential motorcade could have made the journey from Trump's hotel to the cemetery in an hour.

In an interview recorded on Saturday with CNN after talks with Trump, Macron said the two leaders had spoken about what his office has portrayed as a misunderstanding. 'And he understands that the United States can only do so much, in fairness to the United States'.

He and first lady Melania arrived separately from the other world leaders, who gathered together at the presidential Elysee Palace and traveled to the ceremony by bus.

A further $US700 million will go to state export financing agency Efic, to support Australian businesses operating in the Pacific. A new Pacific facility is to be established at the Australian Institute of Police Management to train Pacific police leaders.

The U.S. president told Macron as they began a series of meetings that he appreciates France's willingness to pay more for its defense.

But Mr Trump caused controversy by cancelling a trip to a U.S. cemetery on Saturday because of bad weather.

Merkel said in a statement the forum showed that "today there is a will, and I say this on behalf of Germany with full conviction, to do everything to bring a more peaceful order to the world, even though we know we still have much work to do".

Trump said at the meeting, 'We want to absolutely be there.

The row began when Mr Macron told French radio station Europe 1 radio on Tuesday "we must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States".

Trump, who has proudly declared himself a nationalist, sat mostly stone-faced as he listened to Macron, who sees himself as Europe's foil to the rising sentiment, which has taken hold in Hungary and Poland among other countries.

Despite portraying himself as a solid supporter of USA troops, Trump has yet to visit any serving on the frontline in stark contrast to his predecessors. And I think it's very fair and it's very important, ' he said.
