'Multiple injuries' in California bar shooting: Fire department

At least 12 people were killed.

Sheriff Geoff Dean, who choked back tears while talking about Helus, said his friend had been talking to his wife when the shooting call came in.

Long reportedly shot a bouncer or security guard outside and forced his way into the bar, witnesses said.

Long was found dead in the Borderline Bar and Grill after 12 people were shot to death late on Wednesday.

Holden Harrah, a young man who saw the incident, cried as he told CNN that a place where he goes every week to have fun with friends had been a scene of carnage.

'All I wanted to do was get as many people out as possible, ' he said while wearing a bloodstained t-shirt.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Thousand Oaks, Calif. on Thursday to honor fallen Ventura County Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who was killed while responding to a mass shooting at a bar overnight.

Helus was one of the first on the scene and was struck multiple times when he went through the front door, the sheriff's office said.

"I got concerned, so I called the sheriffs", neighbor Tom Hanson said outside his home Thursday as federal and local law enforcement officers searched Long's house.

"I have nothing to believe there is any terrorism link but we will certainly look at that option", he said.

The gunman entered the California bar dressed in black and armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun, according to the Los Angeles Times. Newsom said he supports people's right to bear arms, but he is concerned about gun violence and thinks California should lead the way on gun controls.

"We have not found any type of assault rifle inside the location", he said.

"As you know, these are ongoing investigations and that information will come out as soon as we are able to determine exactly who the suspect was and what motive he might have had for this horrific event".

Among the victims was Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, who ran into the building after hearing gunshots.

Helus is survived by a wife and son.

Reports said there were around a 100 patrons inside the nightclub when the shooting began.

"There's people that live a whole lifetime without seeing this, and then there's people that have seen it twice", he said.

It was unclear how the injuries were sustained or the extent.

It was not immediately clear what Long did after leaving active duty.

President Trump wrote on Twitter that he has been "fully briefed on the awful shooting in California".

Police said Long appeared to have shot randomly into the crowd at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, about 50km west of Los Angeles. "And that's what's really blowing my mind, it's a really safe area".
