12 killed in United States bar shooting

Later never came for the couple, as Helus was shot several times and killed in a gun battle with troubled former US Marine Ian David Long inside the bar, which was hosting its popular, weekly "College Country Night".

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations.

Dean estimated 10 to 15 people went to the area hospitals for what he expects are minor injuries.

Twelve people were killed including Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran nearing retirement who responded to reports of shots fired and was gunned down as he entered the bar.

Mental health specialists talked with Long and found that no special action was necessary.

Berge, who took care of Long's mother's dogs, said she told him following that incident she anxious her son might take his own life but did not fear he would hurt her. The episode was thought to be possible post-traumatic stress disorder because of his military background.

Mr Dean said the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of a beating at a bar.

He said he appeared to have shot at random inside the club, using only a Glock.45-caliber handgun.

But the weapon had an extended magazine, meaning it can carry more ammunition, which is illegal in California. The ATF is now investigating how and when the weapon was purchased.

The motive for the attack was under investigation.

'Multiple injuries' in California bar shooting: Fire department
Ron Helus , a 29-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, who ran into the building after hearing gunshots. Long was found dead in the Borderline Bar and Grill after 12 people were shot to death late on Wednesday.

Dean said officials had been unable to find a connection between Long and the Borderline bar.

Neighbor Tom Hanson said Long lived in the home with his mother.

The 20-year-old looked over to see a man dressed in black firing on bar employees who worked the front desk.

"We haven't found any correlation", the sheriff said.

Alexis Tait, 23, said she heard what sounded like firecrackers going off until she saw her friend Kristina Kaylee Morisette fall to the floor - one of a dozen people the gunman killed. He ranked as a corporal in 2011 and his military occupational specialty was machine gunner, the Marine Corps said. His last duty assignment was at Kanehoe Bay, Hawaii.

Matt Wennerstrom said he is a regular at the Borderline Bar & Grill and customers are like his "family".

Long's cousin, AJ Schramm, told CBS News Long's father passed away from cancer early in his life.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, said lawmakers would start crafting a gun-control bill when the House convenes with a Democratic majority in early January. He said Long became distant from family members upon his return from the Marines.

Sparks was a gifted dancer and artist, her friend Sarah Penrose said.

"I saw someone throw a bar stool through the window and I followed suit and I threw a bar stool through the window and we just pushed people towards the bar, so that they weren't in the direct line of sight of him and then just filed as many people, everyone that was there, out through that back window", he explained.
