Press freedom advocates released after detention in Tanzania

Quintal‚ now working for the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)‚ was detained at her hotel in Dar es Salaam with her CPJ colleague on Wednesday evening.

"We continue to engage with our Government of Tanzania counterparts on a wide range of issues, including those related to human rights", read a statement from the State Department adding that it remains committed to values od democracy, rule of law and freedom of expression among others.

Quintal worked for the Guardian as an editor while Ms Mumo worked for the Nation group before shifting to CPJ.

The Department of global relations and cooperation says South African journalist Angela Quintal and a colleague returned to their hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in the early hours of this morning.

Ms Muthoki Mumo, a former Nation reporter, and her CPJ colleague Ms Angela Quintal were detained on Wednesday in their hotel room in Dar es Salaam and then taken to an undisclosed location by people who identified themselves as immigration officials.
