Donald Trump braces for investigations galore as Dems take House

Democrats Win First Two Republican Held Seats In US Midterms

The significance of the GOP victory in the Senate, which the party has controlled for the past four years, was magnified because Democrats stood a solid chance of wresting control of the House from the Republicans.

But while Trump's plays to his most loyal supporters helped rev up the crowds in small towns and rural areas in red states, they were viewed as a turnoff to moderates, independents and women in the suburban districts needed to keep the House in GOP hands.

Whether or not the night constitutes a "blue wave" for Democrats is unclear given the mixed results overall and the typical losses for the president's party, but the split Congress will make life more hard for the president.

Doubling the Democratic pain, North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp crashed to defeat against Republican state lawmaker Kevin Cramer.

The Democratic Party has successfully won control of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to multiple projections.

As the first polls were closing Tuesday, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement reinforcing Trump's point.

"Sanders spoke to reporters at the White House Tuesday night, as election returns were still coming in".

"We have already seen huge turnout, people out and about knocking on doors, making sure everybody gets out there, but I think turnout will be very, very high", Democratic candidate Katie Porter, who is running in Irvine, California, against two-term Republican incumbent Mimi Walters, told AFP. It's a long night to go.

Aides set up televisions in the White House residence for Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their guests to watch election results come in, with the sets tuned to different cable news channels.

Polls across six states closed at 7 p.m. EST, including battlegrounds Georgia, Indiana and Kentucky.

Democrats celebrated a handful of victories in their "blue wall" Midwestern states, electing or re-electing governors in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and in Wisconsin, where Scott Walker was defeated by state education chief Tony Evers.

In particular, she mentioned the upset of Sen.

The Associated Press reported that almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to a national survey of more than 115,000 voters. Activists bypassed Pelosi's vast party apparatus, which shoveled $129 million to the Democratic campaign committee, and instead rewarded candidates through online donations and social media promotion.

Trump sought to take credit for retaining the GOP's Senate majority, even as the party lost control of the House.

Americans voted enthusiastically, with long lines quickly forming at polling stations from NY to California and from Missouri to Georgia.

Critics, including the Democrats, accused Trump of employing racist and xenophobic rhetoric that incited violence, a charge he and many of his fellow Republicans rejected. Neither could actually be removed from office without a two-thirds Senate vote, but a Democrat House could dominate months of congressional business and news headlines with investigations and proceedings. In addition, 36 states and three territories are holding gubernatorial elections. Voters were reported to be waiting for up to three hours to cast their votes. In a hectic, short legislative session, they hustled to put legislation on Gov. Jay Inslee's desk, including bills that had stalled for years. "You know what I say?"

Hannah Ackermann said officials at the polling site offered various explanations for the delay, including blaming workers who didn't show up and overloaded machines.

Minority Leader of the House and potential next Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave a speech that exuded confidence of success for the Democrats after her party were projected to take control of the chamber.

But she added: "A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together, because we have all had enough of division".

"Pelosi credits Democratic politicians and activists across the country with helping to fend off attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act following 2016 election results that left Republicans in control of Congress and the White House".
