Trump turns up pressure before midterms, focused on Senate

Donald Trump

Trump, who frequently warns of voter fraud and has claimed without evidence that millions of fraudulent votes were cast in 2016, said on Twitter on Monday that law enforcement should be on the lookout for "illegal voting".

Everything from a massive personal victory to impeachment proceedings is on the table for the US President.

Billionaire former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who personally invested US$110 million to help Democrats this year, largely in the House, has seized on voter education levels in picking target races, according to senior aide Howard Wolfson. Faced with low Republican enthusiasm, Trump calculated that immigration would again be an animating issue for his base.

"A vote for any Democrat this November is a vote to really put extreme far left politicians in charge of Congress and to destroy your jobs, slash your incomes, undermine your safety and put illegal aliens before American citizens", Trump said during a rally Saturday in Pensacola, Florida.

"I don't think there's a Democrat in this country that does't have a little angst left over from 2016 deep down", said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, which spent more than ever before - almost US$60 million in all - to support Democratic women this campaign season.

And describing the election as even more consequential than his own historic 2008 victory as the first non-white president, Mr Obama said more than politics is at stake. A globalist is a person that wants the globe to do well-frankly, not caring about our country so much. "That changes a lot", Wallace said. As 2016 showed us, though, taking strong odds and reading them as guarantees can make you look awfully dumb.

"If Republicans continue to hold everything, they would continue to be 100 per cent responsible for Washington. And they want to erase America's borders", Trump told a raucous rally in Chattanooga, Tennessee late Sunday. We're just pointing out that predictions of a blue tsunami are long gone, and some of the most liberal news outlet in the country are quickly hedging their bets just in case a repeat of 2016 occurs.

Trump spent his final hours on the trail Monday in OH and in, with a further stop planned in Missouri.

"No, he will have lost the House", Wallace said.

Laying into the tangled legal scandals enveloping the Trump administration - especially the possible collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian operatives - Mr Obama scoffed: "They've racked up enough indictments to fill a football team".

If you include the two independents who caucus with them, there are 26 Democrat seats up for grabs, many of which are in pro-Trump states.

In the week leading up to Tuesday's elections, Trump said he was optimistic about the outcome for the Republican Party, while at the same time using fear tactics to try to gain more support for his party.

"These are corrupt people", the president said. First among them would be a potentially bitter leadership fight in the House to replace retiring Speaker Paul Ryan. "It's something that the American public will probably expect to come up, based on what they've been hearing in the lead-up to these elections", she said.

In Ohio, Republican National Committee spokeswoman Mandi Merritt referred to pro-Trump enthusiasts as a "grassroots army" that could be harnessed and dispatched to boost Republican voter turnout. It'll all work out but I don't think that's going to happen'.

At a rally in West Virginia Friday a defiant Trump brushed off the prospect of a Democratic House takeover.

"Congressional gridlock would happen. One election won't eliminate racism, sexism or homophobia", Mr Obama said.

"They key thing is the Democrats could actually shut down the confirmation process for judicial nominees, which is pretty significant". Following the controversy surrounding the Senate confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanuagh, the Generic Congressional Ballot was tied for two weeks, but then Democrats moved back ahead.

Problem two, those House investigations into the President and the White House would have some extra teeth with a Democratic Senate backing them up. Under the 2011 map, Republicans won 13 of 18 seats in three straight elections, even as Democrats dominated in statewide elections. A serious Republican challenger could try and win the nomination of the party for 2020.
