Midterm elections in pictures 2018: Who will win the election TODAY?

With opinion polls showing dozens of tight USA congressional and gubernatorial races in Tuesday's election, the current and former presidents said the results would determine what kind of country Americans live in for the next two years.

The final Politico/Morning Star poll conducted days before the midterm elections showed Democrats' advantage over Republicans slipping on the generic congressional ballot.

The entire 435-member House of Representatives and a third of the 100-seat Senate are up for grabs.

But where the Republicans should be singing the praises of an economy firing on all cylinders, Trump has been hewing closely to his 2016 playbook, relentlessly rallying his red-hatted supporters with a war footing against a South American migrant caravan slowly making its way through Mexico.

A much smaller 23 percent said the President was why they would vote for a Republican candidate. He added: "The Democrat agenda is a socialist nightmare".

"This first midterm, at this check-in moment, to have these different forces converge in different ways, to have the different loud landscape for the House and the Senate".

Asked about his main fear if Democrats take the House, amid forecasts of a blue wave, Trump said: 'We'll just have to work a little bit differently.

They need to pick up two dozen seats to claim the House majority.

What makes it even more hard for the Democrats is the majority of the seats in these states were overwhelmingly in favour of Trump in 2016.

Republicans are expected to retain their slight majority in the US Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve US Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes. However, Trump walked away with the victory against all odds.

"So ultimately, if we're going to have a smaller team I think we're going to have a more united team", he says.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other GOP leaders have also been blaming Social Security and Medicare as sources of the ballooning deficit, suggesting cuts and other reforms could be coming if they hold control. "It's an awakening of the Democratic Party".

The contest to succeed retiring California Republican Darell Issa is likely going to Democrat Mike Levin, and in Washington state's 8th district, Democrat Kim Schrier's chance of replacing retiring Republican Dave Reichert has moved from "Toss Up" to "Lean Democratic".

Democrats during the 2016 demanded Trump release his tax returns. Others have pledged to pursue impeachment, although removal from office is unlikely so long as the GOP controls the Senate or even maintains a healthy minority. Democrats lead among women, younger voters, and black voters. "They know that to win re-election they've got to win Florida and OH".

Voters across America are going to the polls today for the midterm elections.

"The Democrats will do quite well in the House of Representatives, in the governorships and state legislatures".

Governors are also being chosen in 36 out of 50 states.

On Monday, O'Rourke depicted the contest as an epic event, saying that Texans "will define the future, not just of Texas, but of this country, not just this generation but every generation that follows". The demographic shifts also reflect each party's closing argument.

President Trump has repeatedly referred in his speeches to the caravan of migrants making its way through Central America towards the U.S. border.

Last Friday's employment report helped the Republicans.

Democrats, meanwhile, have beat their drum on health care. "Health care for millions of people".

In Cleveland, Trump bashed DeWine's Democratic opponent, Richard Cordray, whom he declared "a bad person" who "has hurt a lot of people". This year they filed a lawsuit to overturn what remains of the ACA and it was backed by the justice department, which said it concurred with the need to end the law's guarantees that insurance companies could not deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

"He is a sexist, a racist, a homophobe, a xenophobe and a religious bigot".

The Republican president is the omnipresent figure as Americans render their verdict Tuesday on the past 21 months of Trumpism.
