Almost 3000 NYPD Body Cameras Pulled After One Explodes in NYC Precinct

NYPD suspends nearly 3,000 body cameras after one explodes

The NYPD has pulled some Vievu body cameras from the streets after an LE-5 model (similar to the LE-3 seen here) exploded on Sunday.

The New York City Police Department has suspended use of nearly 3,000 body cameras after one of them "exploded", according to a statement from the NYPD.

O'Neill suspended the use of some bodycam devices "effective immediately" after one of the city's cameras exploded over the weekend.

The NYPD suspended use of its almost 3,000 Vievu model LE-5 body cameras effective immediately. Officers who were issued the LE-5 cameras would continue working without body cameras, officials said.

The cop quickly removed the device before it exploded on the ground, avoiding injury.

It ordered officers to stop using the Vievu LE-5 camera out of "an abundance of caution".

Wimbledon to introduce final-set tiebreakers
The decision was made after a review of data from the past 20 majors in London and consultation with both players and officials. However, until now the US Open has been the only Grand Slam that uses a tie-break in the fifth set.

The officer retrieved the body cam for a midnight patrol and saw the smoke exiting the bottom of the portal.

The NYPD has deployed 15,500 body-worn cameras, and the earlier model, the Vievu LE4, is not affected by the defect.

According to The Daily Beast, approximately 15,500 body cameras are now deployed throughout the New York Police Department. "The cause and scope of the defect are now being investigated", the NYPD released explained.

Earlier this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that more than 20,000 cameras will be in use in the 34,000-member NYPD by the end of 2018, a year earlier than anticipated.

As for what caused the Vievu camera to catch fire, the NYPD believes the "incident revealed a potential for the battery inside the camera to ignite", but is now investigating.

"Officer safety is of the utmost importance to Axon".
