"'We are hungry!" Migrants wail at Mexico-Guatemala border

Thousands of migrants are about to be at Mexico's doorstep.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lands at Mexico City International Airport on October 18.

On Thursday, the Mexican government asked the United Nations Refugee Agency for help in assisting migrants filing for refugee protection at the border, as Mr. Trump threatened to deploy the USA military and close the southern US border with Mexico if it doesn't stop what he described as an "onslaught" of migrants.

US -bound migrant caravans have been going on for years - with traveling in numbers seen as offering protection from assaults, robberies, even shakedowns by police.

The key questions: Will Mexico let the migrants in?

Domingo Mateo, 68, from Honduras recalled how he traveled north with about a dozen Central Americans so they could watch one another's backs.

The caravan quickly grabbed the attention of world leaders as word of its formation spread over the weekend.

The re-emergence of immigration as a pressing concern in the US comes in the middle of heated midterm elections, and Mr. Trump has featured the issue in political rallies held around the country on behalf of Republican congressional candidates.

"If the Democrats would stop being obstructionists and come together, we could write up and agree to new immigration laws in less than one hour", he posted at 10:35 a.m. on Saturday.

Trump has also threatened to cut foreign aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Migrants who want to apply for refuge in Mexico were welcome to do so, they said, but any who decide to cross illegally and are caught will be detained and deported.

Mexico's Interior Department said in a statement that it had received 640 refugee requests by Hondurans at the border crossing.

Police deployed pepper spray after some migrants tried to push their way through the Mexican side.

A bridge over the river marks an official crossing point.

But others, exhausted of waiting, jumped off the bridge into the Suchiate River.

They have also moved about nine metres back from the gate that separates them from Mexican police to establish a buffer zone. Those who do so will be held "at a migratory station" for up to 45 business days.

He also said that if Mexico failed to block the migrants' course, he would deploy the USA military to the south-west border. I hope this stops.

Guatemala also deployed hundreds of police on the eve of the arrival of over 1,600 Honduran migrants who are heading to the U.S.in an attempt to flee the rampant violence and poverty that affects Honduras and other Central American countries.

"The children are suffocating", said a young man.

Mexico's government has sought assistance from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help process migrants claiming refugee status, which could help it to disperse the caravan.

"It's a situation that is nearly impossible to resolve at this time for Mexico", Salazar told CNN en Español Thursday.

On Thursday, Trump branded the migrants an "onslaught" and an "assault on our country" in a series of typically fiery tweets. Early Thursday, he threatened to close the US border if Mexico let the migrants advance.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump thanked Mexico for holding back the migrants from crossing into the US.

"If that's the case, I don't think Mexico should be too anxious because in a sense ... it's the same kind of thing USA administrations have been doing for a long time", Leutert said.
