Former Malaysia DPM Zahid Hamidi arrested by anti-graft agency

He pleaded not guilty to eight counts of abusing his power, ten counts of criminal breach of trust, and 27 counts of money laundering.

MACC said the arrest was done after obtaining clearance from the Attorney-General's Chambers to charge Ahmad Zahid.

MACC confirmed that Zahid was arrested at 3.15pm at its headquarters in Putrajaya today.

The agency didn't give further details, but it has questioned Zahid several times over allegations that funds in his family-run welfare group were used to pay credit card bills belonging to him and his wife.

He will be charged on Friday at 8am at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

It added that he faces several charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

"Zahid's image as Umno's president and chairman of BN has been tarnished, this will cause people's confidence towards Umno to decline", said analyst Awang Azman Awang Pawi of the University of Malaya.

About 200 of Dr Ahmad Zahid's supporters assembled opposite the MACC headquarters on Thursday night as a sign of solidarity with the UMNO president, Bernama reported.

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a former deputy premier and ally of scandal-mired ex-leader Najib Razak, is accused of crimes that include accepting bribes to award government contracts and money-laundering.

Despite the possibility of being arrested, Dr Ahmad Zahid was his calm self, smiling and waving at the media corp.

She said Ahmad Zahid had been detained for 10 days (under the Internal Security Act) when he was the Umno Youth chief.

"This action is a strategy to portray Zahid as an untrustworthy and unqualified leader", said Jalaluddin Alias, a member of the party's supreme council.
