Turkish police say 'evidence' found at Saudi consulate on Khashoggi case

The Washington Post The Washington Post

The "Vanishing" of Jamal Khashoggi on October 2nd, 2018 inside the Saudi Arabia Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey signalled the setting of the sun on the "strangler & emerging tyrant" of the Arabian Peninsula.

What evidence Turkish officials could gather at the consulate remained unknown.

A Turkish foreign ministry source said the police would search the consulate again on Tuesday as well as the consul's residence, which Turkish television has previously reported could be linked to Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Turkish team that searched the consulate took away soil samples and a metal door from the garden, a Reuters witness said, but a senior official acknowledged the difficulty of collecting evidence 13 days after the incident.

"It is essential that the Turkish authorities with the full support from the government of Saudi Arabia has been able to conduct a thorough investigation and to formally publish the results of this investigation when they were signed", - stated in the message.

Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz, who was waiting outside the consulate the day he disappeared, tweeted a Koranic verse warning those who kill on goal, with the hashtag "Jamal is the Martyr of the Word". Turkish officials fear Saudi officials killed and dismembered the writer inside the mission.

Turkish authorities have told MEE that they have video and audio recordings of the journalist's alleged murder, and found evidence of blood in the consulate's sewage system before being allowed into the consulate. Leaked surveillance footage show diplomatic cars traveled to the consul's home shortly after Khashoggi's disappearance at the consulate.

"It just didn't seem like a situation that we would want to get into and as that situation hasn't concluded, and there are no definite answers, and it's not for me to be coming up with solutions", the trip to Saudi Arabia - and a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS) - was therefore canceled. The king greeted Pompeo by saying: "I hope you are comfortable here".

Trump, who dispatched Pompeo to speak to the monarch over Khashoggi's disappearance, said after talking with King Salman that the slaying could have been carried out by "rogue killers".

Khashoggi moved to Washington previous year fearing retribution for his criticism of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests.

Khashoggi disappeared two weeks ago at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. "He had this guy murdered in a consulate in Turkey, and to expect me to ignore it, I feel used and abused".

Saudi authorities have yet to give a clear explanation of Khashoggi's fate, as several countries - particularly Turkey, the US, and the United Kingdom - are pressing for the case to be cleared up as soon as possible.

King Salman opened an internal investigation into the prominent government critic's disappearance over the weekend, and on Monday US President Donald Trump said "rogue killers" may be behind it after speaking to the Saudi leader by phone.

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks with King Salman over the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as reports emerged that Riyadh was poised to acknowledge that Khashoggi was killed in its consulate in Istanbul. Saudi officials previously have called the allegations "baseless", but reports in USA media on Tuesday suggested the kingdom may acknowledge the writer was killed there.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Turkey, the Turkish media reported October 16.

Mr Khashoggi, a USA resident, vanished after entering the consulate to get marriage documents. The Turkish official would not comment on the disposal method for the body.

Turkish police Monday searched the consulate for the first time since the disappearance of Khashoggi, a Saudi national and United States resident who had become increasingly critical of Prince Mohammed.
