Trump threatens to 'close border' over Central America caravan

Honduran migrants part of a caravan trying to reach the U.S. are seen on a truck during a new leg of her travel in Zacapa Guatemala

President Donald Trump tweeted early Thursday morning that he will send troops and close the border if Mexico lets the latest caravan of thousands of migrants marching north reach the boundary between the two nations.

The official also said the migrant caravan will be a "prominent" topic of discussion at those meetings.

The president's tweets come after more than 2,000 Honduran migrants hoping to come to the US resumed their travel northward Wednesday even hours after Trump warned "anybody entering the United States illegally will be arrested and detained" in a tweet.

"I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" he said.

Pregnant Meghan Markle dazzles in $10K outfit Melbourne
During a fitness display by 150 women, Meghan was convinced to throw an Australian Football League (AFL) game ball. Some members of the crowd sang Stand By Me - a song the couple chose for their wedding service in May.

As with a similar march in April, organizers of the march claim they will claim refugee status when they reach the USA border with Mexico.

President says no more money will be given to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador if the caravan is not stopped; William La Jeunesse reports on the march to America. The president made the comments as a caravan of Central American migrants is trying to reach the United States. There are now United States troops deployed on the frontier with Mexico, with National Guard members from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California working on border security. Some have said they are fleeing gang violence, and are traveling as a group for protection from criminal gangs.

Trump has frequently portrayed undocumented immigrants to the USA as a criminal threat and in league with Democrats - a tactic also adopted by many Republican candidates in the ongoing mid-term election campaign. "All Democrats fault for weak laws!" In his series of Thursday tweets, Trump threatened to rip up a recently signed trade agreement with Mexico if Enrique Peña Nieto's government doesn't act to stop illegal immigration and the drug trade at the border, with Mexican drug cartels making an estimated $19-29 billion per year on drug sales in the US.
