Reading to London Paddington passengers could face delays as cable repairs continue

Paddington has been closed this morning after damage to the electric wires

Train passengers are still being affected by major disruptions for all journeys to and from London this today due to damaged wires.

Services were delayed or cancelled throughout Wednesday.

Two of the four lines usually used were opened at around 12.40pm after engineers cleared debris and restored power so trapped trains could be moved, but Network Rail, the Government-owned company responsible for managing Britain's rail infrastructure, could only perform repairs while trains were not running.

The focal point of these struggles was Paddington, where damaged overhead wires mean no trains will run out of the station until at least midday.

Great Western Railway has urged people to "only travel if necessary".

Commuters across London faced serious difficulty getting to work this morning as services faced extreme difficulty. Services will depart every 30 minutes.

GWR has said it is operating a reduced service and is advising anyone travelling further than Reading to head straight to Waterloo, Marylebone or Euston.

"Customers intending to travel to or from intermediate stations between London Paddington and Slough are advised not attempt to travel by train until such time that confirmation has been published that the route has been reopened".

The damage was caused by a high-speed Class 802 Hitachi train which was being tested between London and Bristol before its handover to GWR.

GWR is investing £500m in the new fleet delivered by Hitachi which will replace the operator's high-speed rolling stock by the end of next year.
