Keira Knightley 'banned' her daughter from two Disney princess films

Keira Knightley

Actress Keira Knightley says her daughter is banned from watching some of the Disney movies, including "Cinderella".

In contrast Ruth Walker from Newcastle Upon Tyne, who has two young nieces, agreed with Keira Knightley's strict ban, saying: "90% of the Disney movies are outdated".

"She wanted to be a dentist".

After the audience applauds her answer, Knightley explains the reasoning behind her Little Mermaid decision.

While talking about the film, Knightley told Ellen that she is not a fan of every Disney movie, since there are a few that don't uphold her feminist values.

Speaking with Ellen Degeneres on Tuesday, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star said the "The Little Mermaid" and "Cinderella" are persona-non-viewing in her household because they send the message that women should wait for a handsome prince to rescue them or that women should give up everything for a man.

Knightley - who has always been outspoken about women's rights and the ways women are depicted - recently wrote an essay called "The Weaker Sex" for the book Feminists Don't Wear Pink (and Other Lies) in which she got real about giving birth.

"Don't", she declared. "Rescue yourself, obviously". And this is the one that I'm quite annoyed about because I really like the film, but...

'I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. "I thought, you know, that's a stable career..."

The Bend It Like Beckham actress is typically private about her family life but also opened up about Edie's dream profession. "She roars very well". "Up with you all night and work all day", she wrote. They don't see their children.
