Canelo Alvarez Inks Massive $365 Million Five-Year DAZN Deal

Boxer Canelo Alvarez Inks $365 Million Contract With Streaming Network DAZN, Richest Deal in the History of Sports

DAZN, which launched in the United States in September, stepped up to the plate, culminating with a deal that will begin when Alvarez fights Rocky Fielding on December 15 at Madison Square Garden in NY. "The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the US$70 or US$80 for my fights on pay-per-view".

The Mexican was a free agent in terms of a TV partner after HBO Boxing pulled out of the sport and it now appears as if the new streaming service has won the race for one of, if not the biggest, fish in the fight world.

The agreement is part of a broader deal between DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions, the fight organization founded by former champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya.

Alvarez, 28, outpointed middleweight destroyer Gennady Golovkin in their September PPV rematch, which also marked his last bout with HBO after the premium cable network announced it was ceasing boxing coverage after 45 years. "I know how important I am to any platform I go to".

The move comes after DAZN, which only launched in the USA in September, looks to exploit a gap in the market after HBO announced it will end its 45-year history of broadcasting boxing at the end of 2018. "You've only got one pay per view fighter in America, Canelo Alvarez, and he's gone (from pay per view)".

A subscription in the U.S. will cost $9.99 under the five-year term with Golden Boy, which will also oversee another ten fights that will stream on DAZN in 2019.

"I was never anxious because I'm very confident in myself", he said.

The deal, which is for 11 fights, will see him earn a minimum of £278,148,250 over the next five years. The streaming service, which costs $9.99 a month, is looking more and more like a must-have for combat sports fans.

As BoxingScene.com previously reported, there is a rehydration clause with a second-day weigh-in - which prevents Fielding from putting on more than 10 pounds on the morning of the fight. "Forget about what the price is, the amount of money that we're making".
