Apple Watch Now Helps Study Joint Replacement Patients

Apple Watch to be part of new clinical study

Zimmer Biomet is also commencing the "mymobility" clinical study, created to study the app's impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for joint replacement patients.

Over a million knee and hip replacements occur every year in the USA making them two of the most common surgeries Americans undergo.

Apple and Zimmer Biomet are looking to enroll a substantial 10,000 people in the US for the study.

Apple made a big splash into the regulated healthcare space with its new Apple Watch, an FDA-cleared device with the ability to perform EKGs and detect atrial fibrillation. The study is launching today and has the possibility to enroll as many as 10,000 patient participants in the United States. With this partnership, the Apple Watch can be used by patients to send their own data to their doctors before and after their surgeries. Currently, only those registered in the study will be able to use the mymobility app.

Your Apple Watch may be key in recovering from knee and hip replacement surgery.

The app is called mymobility and it works with Apple Watch and the iPhone as well. Patients will be provided with support and guidance as they prepare for and recover from these surgeries, while surgeons will be delivered continuous data to optimize care.

Apple has announced that it has teamed up with medical device maker Zimmer Biomet on a new app that runs on the Apple Watch that aims to gather data on patients who have had knee or hip replacements.

The app will guide patients through their recovery, and will let surgeons send reminders and advice to the patient's Apple Watch, while the smartwatch will send back movement insights to the healthcare professional.

"This solution will connect consumers with their doctors continuously, before and after surgery", said Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams in a statement. It aids patients after their surgeries and tracks their activity while at the same time allowing their surgeons to monitor them and also to stay in touch with the patients via secure, private messaging. However, the company will make it available to everyone in the future. Apple also donated 1000 Watches for another study on eating disorders.
