Toddler stabbed, baked in oven; grandmother in custody, Mississi

Grandmother charged with murder after stabbed baby found in hot oven

One person has been arrested after police found a baby, who appeared to have been stabbed, inside an oven at a MS home.

Carolyn Jones, 48, has been charged with the first-degree murder of her baby granddaughter, NBC reports.

Police were called Monday night to a home on Martin Luther King Drive in the small city of Shaw, Williams said.

Sheriff Kelvin Williams confirmed at a news conference that the toddler was found in an oven and had been burned, according to TV station WREG video of the news conference. It was unclear late Tuesday if she has a lawyer who could speak for her.

Strain says officials are still investigating the girl's cause of death, as well as when the girl may have died.

"I have been in law enforcement a long time and one of the hardest things that I have experienced is when you see a child as a victim", Williams told reporters. "This is one of the most frightful things I've seen in doing law enforcement". The body has been sent for an autopsy.

Williams says a relative found the girl.

Toys, a discarded high chair and police evidence tape are part of the trash outside a home on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, where a 20-month-old girl was found dead inside an oven on Monday evening at the residence, in Shaw, Miss. It's trying for us to come upon a scene and see a victim such as this, ' he said. Williams said autopsy results were not yet complete Tuesday afternoon.

Charges have not been filed yet.

In 2012, a woman in Greenville, about 20 miles from Shaw, pleaded guilty to cooking her 3-year-old son to death in an oven. It is not known if the baby died before or after she was put in the oven. The state's pathologist will try to discern whether the infant was dead prior to being baked in the oven.
