Plane carrying Melania Trump forced to turn around over smoke in cabin

A few minutes after takeoff, those aboard the plane observed a thin haze of smoke coming from the cabin and smelled something burning.

A plane carrying US First Lady Melania Trump was forced to turn around and land after the cabin filled with smoke. A member of the crew handed out damp washcloths for passengers to put over their mouths, and Secret Service agents rushed to the front of the plane. The smoke and smell slowly dissipated.

The First Lady is still expected to make the trip after a new plane is found, according to reports.

The entourage held wet towels over their faces until the plane touched down safely at the military base.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director, told CNN the incident was a "minor mechanical issue".

Trump was on her way to Philadelphia for a visit to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital related to her "Be Best" campaign.
