Mother Pelted By Hail While Shielding Her Baby During QLD Storms

The ‘superhero’ mom was happy that they made it out alive from the storm

A young mother in Australia was covered in cuts and bruises after she shielded her 4-month-old daughter from a risky supercell tornado. The 23-year-old stopped the vehicle when the intensity of the storm made it too unsafe to press on.

"We parked at the side of the [road] when the storm got too heavy and the hail blew out our windows", Simpson wrote on Facebook.

The storms that battered that part of Queensland were damaging.

"There's people from Norway, America, Canada, and a lot of people across Australia".

Since the storm on Thursday, Mrs Simpson has been praised nationally for her sheer bravery. She then covered her baby with her body as the hailstones came at them.

Most of the skin from her left arm was shredded, while the other arm was "completely black" from bruises, the report said. Despite her desperate attempts to shield the child with her body, she said her daughter ended up with some minor "bumps".

The mother posted photos of herself in the hospital showing her heavily bruised body.

"I looked down and I could see she was screaming but I couldn't even hear her, that's how loud it was", she said.

I've learnt my lesson today, NEVER drive in a hail storm! Seeing the storm aggravating, she pulled over her vehicle to wait until it becomes a little favourable to drive again.

She was left covered in welts, cuts and bruises after the tennis ball-sized hail pelted her body, the ABC reported.

An Australian mother used her body as a shield to protect her baby from tennis ball-sized hunks of hail during a powerful storm that smashed the windows of her vehicle. "I pulled over because it was just way too risky".

She pulled the vehicle over immediately and leapt into the back of the auto in order to act as a human shield for the screaming child.

"I didn't realise the danger of what hail could do", Ms Simpson told reporters.

"A mother's love can make you do the unimaginable", commented Candice Lamb on Simpson's Facebook post.

The extreme weather event has been described by local meteorologists as a supercell storm.

The winds tore roofs off homes and businesses and hail destroyed wheat, barley, melon and stone fruit crops, downed power lines and cut roads.

"It could have been a lot worse, that's for sure", Simpson told broadcaster 9News.

Aside from hailstones, the powerful storm sweeping across the region saw winds reaching 60 miles per hour that brought down trees and power lines.
