Google challenges record $5 billion European Union fine in Android antitrust case

People wait to enter a Google product launch event in San Francisco California

Google on Tuesday filed an appeal of a $5 billion fine imposed by the European Commission over antitrust violations related to the company's Android mobile operating system.

According to the New York Post, the Department of Justice is also looking into starting an investigation into Google's abuse of its Android monopoly in US, meaning the company may soon be fighting regulators on two fronts.

The European Commission found that Google illegally forced phone manufacturers who preinstall Google's Android apps to stop selling any phones using non-Google versions of Android-supposedly an open-source operating system that's open to adaptation. These practices have denied rivals the chance to innovate and compete on the merits.

EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager ordered Google to "put an effective end to this conduct within 90 days or face penalty payments" of up to 5 per cent of its average daily turnover.

The EU antitrust authorities said the company also paid manufacturers to pre-install only Google Search and blocked them from using rival Android systems. "This is illegal under European Union antitrust rules", Vestager added.

GOOGLE HAS confirmed that it will appeal against the €4.3bn fine bestowed upon it by the European Union.

The decision was made following two years-worth of investigation surrounding Google's Android practices.

In response to the charges, Google CEO Sundar Pichai penned a blog post in July titled, "Android has created more choice, not less".

A story on Sky News suggests that Google has simply asked ad agencies to set up fake companies to sell goods, and advertise in the spaces previously occupied exclusively by Google, thus giving an impression of competition.
