Major UN report says climate change is worse than first thought

The goal posts for the Paris Agreement have moved.

The scientists said the report was meant to guide more than just governments, however, and that action by everyone - including individuals and businesses - would be required to hold the line on climate change. Temperatures would be 1.5C higher between 2030 and 2052 if the world continued at its current pace, it warned.

"By refusing to endorse the findings of the IPCC's 1.5 degree celsius report, the USA has again given a clear signal that it would continue with its climate regressive agenda, which includes obstructing the work of the UNFCCC and promoting fossil fuels like coal and gas", said Chandra Bhushan, deputy DG of the CSE.

Nordhaus and Romer show us that good policy for the economy is the same as good policy for promoting the technological advances essential to continued growth of our current economy and the sustainable balances necessary to ensure the future of the global economy and the global environment for the next generations.

But meeting the more ambitious goal of slightly less warming would require immediate, draconian cuts in emissions of heat-trapping gases and dramatic changes in the energy field.

When asked about the revised carbon budget, co-author Masson-Delmotte said that "if you would like to stabilize global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the key message is that net CO2 emissions must reach zero by 2050, and that's the most important finding of the report".

"We must have laser focus on delivering on 1.5 degrees and this report provides a pathway to get there".

The report was prepared at the request of governments when the global pact to tackle climate change was agreed in Paris almost three years ago. This is analyzed in a recent study showing that the window to prevent runaway climate change and a "hot house" super-heated planet is closing much faster than previously understood. "This points out that every fraction of a degree really does matter".

"E$3 ven with erroneous attribution of extreme weather/climate events and projections using climate models that are running too hot and not fit for objective of projecting 21st century climate change, the IPCC still has not made a strong case for this massive investment to prevent 1.5C warming", she said on her Climate Etc. blog.

The essay, penned by John Horgan, the director of the Center for Science Writings at the Stevens Institute of Technology, cited "ecomodernists" who reject climate panic and frame the question of climate change and humanity's ability to cope with it in radically new terms.

But President Trump has long-criticized climate change measures.

The IPCC report makes clear for the first time that limiting warming to 1.5 degrees requires cutting short-lived super climate pollutions-black carbon, methane, and hydrofluorocarbons-along with carbon dioxide, as well as learning how to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere at scale. Any additional emissions would require the removal of Carbon dioxide from the air.

"It will take government resolve", he said.

The report summary said renewable energy would need to supply 70 percent to 85 percent of electricity by 2050 to stay within a 1.5C limit, compared with about 25 percent now. By lowering emissions and deploying carbon capture technology, we could possibly bring temperatures back down under the threshold. Yesterday's report made it very clear that actually, global warming of 2°C would be really risky.

Efforts to curb climate change must also extend beyond the 2015 Paris Agreement reached among 197 countries - which President Trump withdrew the United States from in June 2017. The report points out that carbon budgets are subject to high levels of uncertainty, related to gaps in the scientific understanding of climate system feedbacks and responses.

The frontrunner in Brazil's presidential election, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, has also indicated he will withdraw the South American country from the accord.
