Five killed in torrential rainstorms in Majorca

People clear debris as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc de Cardassar on the island of Mallorca

At least five people were killed as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc on the Spanish island of Mallorca late Tuesday (October 9) emergency services said.

The rain was so heavy a river burst its banks.

Antonia Bauza, the deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc, confirmed two of the victims were British nationals.

A sports centre - the Miguel Ángel Nadal sports centre in the town of Manacor - has opened its doors to give shelter to local people whose homes have been damaged.

Local media reported that at least another 12 people were still missing following the downpours, but emergency services declined to confirm the figure to Reuters.

"It's been a huge storm".

More than 8 inches of rainfall fell in just a few hours on Tuesday morning, according to the Spanish weather company Aemet. "The situation is a disaster and we're trying to locate survivors and help people but everything is flooded and people can not leave their homes".

Residents swept water and mud out of houses as the floods subsided on Wednesday, leaving roadsides strewn with wrecked vehicles and beaches covered in debris.

Other victims were found in Arta and the coastal town of S'illot, where the overflowed creek reaches the sea.

Emergency meetings have been held to coordinate a response to the devastation.

Spanish authorities said 80 soldiers would join more than 100 rescuers working in the area. "We will be there to support them at this hard time".
