Fernando Alonso says penalty shows 'how bad Formula One is'

Fernando Alonso Japanese GP 2018

The McLaren driver was philosophical about the collision, refusing to blame Stroll.

The McLaren driver was left fuming after being given a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage during a fight with Williams driver Lance Stroll.

"Definitely we have a big thank you to say to Honda", Hartley, who sealed his best ever qualifying result, said on Saturday. So the penalty should have been only for the ones who put me on the grass when I was passing them on the outside, for they were the ones that changed direction, but that's not what happened.

"I think it's hard to understand the decision".

However, Alonso was not happy about the penalty insisting he had no other option but to leave the track, and argued he should not have got the penalty after Stroll had accepted it was his fault.

When asked in what way he meant "bad", he replied: "In the decisions, in the randomness, in the pure consistency". You are braking on the outside at the last corner, and one guy didn't see you and came here to apologise after you go on the gravel and you get the penalty.

"[Stroll] didn't see me". He later apologised to Alonso.

"I know it's only half the job, but I'm sure we made a lot of people happy today with that performance". But it was a quite intense first lap, we recovered a couple of places.

"We didn't have the pace to be in the points and probably the biggest limitation the whole weekend is that we have been a little bit too slow". He infamously called his Le Mans 24 Hours victory this year - in which he drove one of the two Toyotas which enjoyed a significant pace advantage - as the best in that event's long history, while he also claimed no other driver could have replicated his actions at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when he managed to bring a damaged auto back to the pits. "Things got heated and we both got penalties. He gained a massive advantage but at the same time I didn't give him much room so it's just one of those typical racing incidents on the first lap".
