Banksy reveals how he concealed shredder in painting after auction house stunt

Banksy has revealed footage of him hiding a shredder in the Girl with Balloon frameMore

Following Banksy's particularly devious recent stunt- which saw a print of the artist's "Girl With Balloon" destroyed immediately after it had been bought for £1 million - other art owners have apparently been trying to replicate the feat, shredding expensive Banksy work in the belief that it will add value. even though it's likely to have to the complete opposite effect.

"Girl with Balloon" had just sold at Sotheby's Friday for £1,042,000 ($1.4 million, 1.2 million euros) - a joint record for the maverick artist - when it unexpectedly passed through a shredder hidden in the frame.

The spray-painted canvas "Girl With Balloon" went under the hammer at Sotheby's in London, fetching more than three times its pre-sale estimate and equaling a record price for the artist.

But what may come as a surprise to you, is that some art-market watchers said the work could now be worth more in its shredded state, than it was intact. The artist posted a photo of the stunt, midway through shredding, on his Instagram page early Saturday, above the caption: "going, going, gone", imitating an auctioneer.

Alex Branczik is Sotheby's head of contemporary art, Europe, who is quoted by The Art Newspaper as saying "It appears we just got Banksy-ed", after the painting was destroyed.

"The "shredded" work is, in fact, still in one piece, ready to be exhibited in a gallery or sold at another auction", Nanay wrote.

Art prankster Banksy has struck again.

Banksy shared a video on his Instagram account showing him making the frame with an inbuilt shredder. Sotheby's would not reveal the name of the buyer of the work but, according to the New York Times, confirmed that the client was a private collector who placed the winning bid with a Sotheby's staffer via the phone.

"The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the 1.02 million pounds they paid last night", he said.

By the year 2000, Banksy had adopted his now-signature style of stencilling and his works became widely known in Bristol and London.

"We are busy figuring out what this means in an auction context ..."

Mehdi Ben Cheikh, a Parisian street art specialist, said the stunt was "in the same vein as his performance in NY, which questions and criticises the limits of the art market". In the years after World War II, German-born artist Gustav Metzger pioneered "auto-destructive art", creating paintings using acid that ate away the fabric beneath.
