Indonesia quake: survivors hope for their missing ones to return back home

French rescuers on Friday were unable to find the possible sign of life they detected a day earlier under hotel rubble, a week after the destructive quake and tsunami struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island, killing more than 1,550 people and burying hundreds in mud and debris.

Most of those displaced by the natural disaster were among the 350,000 residents of Palu.

A week after a major natural disaster brought devastation to Indonesia's Sulawesi island, the death toll has passed 1,500 and tens-of-thousands remain in urgent need of clean water, shelter and medical care.

A total of 1,424 people have been confirmed dead and over 2,500 injured after the monster natural disaster struck Friday sending destructive waves barrelling into Sulawesi island.

But the death toll, now above 1,500 hundred is still expected to climb.

Indonesian officials expect Palu's airport to re-open later in the day as the Indonesian military is bringing in more troops to assist with security and the search effort. "Then a C130 aircraft will carry the items from Balikpapan to Palu since the A400M will not be allowed to land because the airfield in Palu is slightly damaged", he said, adding that 100 ATM personnel were involved in the mission.

He said the government will ensure that affected children return to school within a month. The government has said hundreds of people were severely injured in Friday's disasters.

The national disaster agency says more than 148 million Indonesians are at risk in earthquake-prone areas and 3.8 million people also face danger from tsunamis, with at most a 40 minute window for warning people to flee.

Save the Children said it has sent more than 1,000 kits to support shelter, hygiene, child-friendly spaces and temporary educational facilities.
