Molinari clinches Ryder Cup glory for dominant Europe

Europe have won the 42nd Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in France.

Another Irishman, Darren Clarke, was captain of Europe the last time the Ryder Cup was played on American soil in 2016. Francesco Molinari completed the best week ever by a European player, remaining undefeated as he beat Phil Mickelson 4 and 2.

Both Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy expected that their opening match in Singles would be a key one, setting the tone for the rest of the day. Certainly it was a tight one, with neither player going more than 2-up. And it was riveting, as the match reached the 18th hole. But as it turned it, it did not impact the outcome, as Thomas' 1-up win was one of just four on the day for the Americans. Two years ago at Hazeltine, where the USA won, 10 matches went to the final hole.

In the U.S. Open, he is remembered for whacking a moving ball with his putter out of frustration at Shinnecock Hills.

Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson and Tony Finau recorded valuable victories at the top of the singles draw, either side of Brooks Koepka halving a high-quality match with Paul Casey.

For all the mountains of statistical data the American leadership employed an analytics firm to provide, nothing helps more than knowing a course inside out.

Team Europe captain Thomas Bjorn lifts the trophy as they celebrate after winning the Ryder Cup.

With the European celebration engulfing the green, Woods could only take off his cap and wish congratulations to the victors before retreating to a spot off to the side with his girlfriend, Erica Herman.

Spain's Jon Rahm followed by downing Tiger Woods 2 and 1, keeping the 14-time major champion winless in four matches this week and snuffing out any United States momentum. The world's top-ranked player, Dustin Johnson, fell 2 and 1 to Ian Poulter of England.

Americans pulled within 10½-9½ Sunday before Europe's first singles victory came from Danish rookie Thorbjorn Olesen, who beat three-time major victor Jordan Spieth 5 and 4. "We went through a transition last time", added Bjorn, one of Darren Clarke's vice captains on that occasion.

"I don't usually cry but what a week", said the Spaniard.

Sergio Garcia became the most successful Ryder Cup player in history with 25.5 points ahead of previous record holder Sir Nick Faldo (25). In golf, there is no tournament on earth where they matter more than the Ryder Cup.

Bryson DeChambeau (0-3-0) - Despite fighting all the way to the final hole well after the Ryder Cup had been decided and throwing a dart on 18 DeChambeau was left without a point after Alex Noren drained a huge putt for a 1-up win. Henrik Stenson showed any concerns about a lingering elbow problem were misplaced as he won all three of his matches, throttling Bubba Watson 5 and 4 in the singles.

It's a sad thought that we might never see Woods and Mickelson on the same Ryder Cup team again. It's been a frustrating two days for the two veterans, each for different reasons.

Reed and Spieth practiced together last week and their pairing seemed all but a given heading into the Cup.

Reed, 28, told the New York Times in a phone interview Sunday after the American team had suffered a 17½ to 10½ defeat to Europe that the decision-making process was a "buddy system" that ignored the input of all but select players - which would imply Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who along with captain Jim Furyk are part of a Ryder Cup committee put in place four years ago.
