New Zealand PM takes her baby into UN assembly hall

While her partner Clarke Gayford is Neve's primary carer, both of them had to tag along with Ardern to NY for the United Nations meeting, as Ardern is still breastfeeding.

Asked by the Today show on the US NBC network if it was harder to govern New Zealand or take her daughter on a 17-hour flight, Ardern responded with a laugh and said "It felt at the time on par" and said she had apologised to her fellow passengers in advance.

Ms Ardern was playing down Neve's appearance on the world stage.

"I wish I could have captured the startled look on a Japanese delegation inside the United Nations yesterday who walked into a meeting room in the middle of a nappy change".

Mr Gayford took to twitter to share Neve's first United Nations experience, which began with 37 hours of flying.

Ardern is breastfeeding and can not be away from her baby for extended periods She was grateful for Gayford's help.

Jacinda Ardern, 38, is only the second world leader to ever give birth while in the office. "Great yarn for her 21st", Gayford added.

Ardern has inspired many with her progressive platform, her support for women's causes and her leadership style. Chris Bramwell reports from NY.

While the the prime minister attends UN meetings, Mr Gayford will take the lead in caring for the First Baby, as a UN ID card playfully described the infant.

The United Nations was delighted to see baby Neve in the General Assembly hall, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

"Prime Minister Ardern is showing that no one is better qualified to represent her country than a working mother".

However, Ardern said Gayford's tickets to NY and expenses would be paid for out of her own pocket, because there were few official spousal engagements Gayford would be required to attend, and most of his time would be taken up caring for Neve.

During a hospital press conference in June, Ardern spoke about how she chose the unique name for her new daughter.

When the event moderator remarked that the baby was backstage and very peaceful, Ardern quipped: "Wasn't at 3:30 this morning". So next time you feel sheepish about having to leave work early to pick up a sick child, ask yourself: "what would Jacinda do?" the piece concluded.
