General election would be ‘people’s vote’ says Labour chancellor

Speaking separately to the BBC's Peinaar's Politics yesterday, Len McLusky, the leader of Britain's biggest union Unite which is also Labour's leading donor, threw his support behind a second referendum, but said the option of staying in the EU should not be on the ballot, and rather the public should choose between whether to endorse May's final deal or opt for no deal at all.

Party members will be asked to agree that "if we can not get a general election, Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote".

And he indicated that even if the decision on the European Union was put to the public in a referendum, the choice would be between accepting a deal or returning to the negotiating table rather than the option of remaining inside the bloc.

But he told BBC Radio 4's Today: "If we are going to respect the referendum it will be about the deal".

With Mrs May ruling out alternative plans, Labour now looks set to oppose any deal this autumn - even though that could leave the United Kingdom facing a no-deal Brexit, which the party says it opposes. "My understanding of what the discussion, certainly within my party has been all about, is: respect the referendum but the deal that comes back, if it's not acceptable to Parliament, we should have a general election or keep the option of a People's Vote on the deal on the table", he told ITV's Good Morning Britain.

"No "ifs", no "buts", Starmer will say in a speech to the party's annual conference, according to advance extracts.

'All the polling that we have seen is that the country is still pretty split down the middle'.

"The leadership knows where the members are and they know where their voters are", the spokesman said.

"In that case it will be about whether you accept the deal or not or whether you send people back to negotiate a proper deal".

A YouGov survey of more than 1,000 Labour members for "The Observer" found 86pc support a referendum on the outcome of Brexit talks, against just 8pc who oppose it.

"The meeting last night was very clear that the question of a public vote should be open. That was clearly the mood of the room, and in fact that's reflected in the motion". They've spent two years backing the Tories' catastrophic Brexit and are even now trying to ignore their own members who want a People's Vote with the option to remain in the EU. "It will entrench, it will polarise, it will consolidate those divisions and those differences". "It will make the 2016 referendum look like a walk in the park".

But Mr Kinnock said that if another referendum were to be held, it would be "absurd" for it not to contain the option of remaining in the EU.
