Corbyn: I will be bound by party decision on second referendum

The leader of the British Labour Party has said he will back a second Brexit referendum if it is supported by a conference of his party.

My understanding of what the discussion, certainly within my party has been all about, is: respect the referendum but the deal that comes back, if it's not acceptable to Parliament, we should have a general election or keep the option of a People's Vote on the deal on the table.

"We are potentially close to a general election, maybe any day", said Mr Watson.

Corbyn's second in command, finance spokesman John McDonnell repeated that Labour was getting ready for an election.

Mr Corbyn told an eve-of-conference rally in Liverpool: "If this Government can't deliver, then I say to Theresa May: the best way to settle this is to have a general election".

Last week the Labour Group on Hounslow Council became one of more than 100 constituency parties to have submitted motions calling for the Labour policy on Brexit to be put to a vote.

A YouGov survey of more than 1,000 Labour members for "The Observer" found 86pc support a referendum on the outcome of Brexit talks, against just 8pc who oppose it.

'Jeremy Corbyn promised a radical expansion of democracy in the economy and wider society and this logic must extend to the Labour Party too.

Until now, Labour MPs only faced a reselection contest if 50% of a constituency's local branches and affiliated unions voted for it in a so-called "trigger ballot".

Their campaign is seen by many MPs on the right of the party as an effort to purge "Blairite" influences and critics of leader Jeremy Corbyn's handling of issues such as antisemitism.

As activists assembled in Liverpool for their annual gathering, Jeremy Corbyn said he would still prefer to force a general election by defeating Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan in the Commons.

He added: 'But I was elected to empower the members of the party.

Brexit minister Dominic Raab again ruled out a new vote, describing the suggestion as "for the birds".

In a hint that the option of remaining in the European Union might not be on the table in any future referendum, he said the form of the question would be decided by Parliament but "it will be about whether you accept the deal or not, or whether you send people back to negotiate a proper deal".

One of these advisors said during a telephone call: "What are you doing in November - because I think we are going to need an election".

According to sources, reported in The Sunday Times, she was warned by members of her party that she should change her stance on the negotiations in time for their pary conference at the weekend or risk a leadership challenge.
