Conway suggests 'left-wing conspiracy' after new Kavanaugh allegation

But even if Kavanaugh doesn't get confirmed to the nation's top court, he will remain a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, an incredibly powerful body that's just a step below the Supreme Court. Then, like now, another Republican president had selected a Supreme Court nominee, now-Justice Clarence Thomas, facing accusations of sexual harassment.

"Despite actual threats to her safety and her life, Dr. Ford believes it is important for senators to hear directly from her about the sexual assault committed against her", the lawyers said in a statement.

The New York Times reports that Kavanaugh, who faces new allegations of another assault in college, kept a calendar that shows he was away from home for most of the summer in 1982. "This is a smear, plain and simple".

White House spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said after publication of the story: "This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man".

On Sunday evening, the New Yorker reported that Senate Democrats are looking into a second woman's account of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh, this time from his freshman year at Yale University.

Kavanaugh staunchly denies both accusations. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the committee, to immediately postpone confirmation proceedings until the FBI could investigate.

Kavanaugh's nomination was already in a perilous state ahead of a hearing planned for Thursday on an allegation by California professor Christine Blasey Ford that he sexually assaulted her at a high school party three decades ago. Separately, Michael Avenatti, who is representing porn actress Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against Trump, tweeted that he has a new female client who has information about Kavanaugh's behavior at high school parties and wants to testify as well.

Brett Kavanaugh Accused of Sexual Misconduct By a Second Woman - Hit & Run
The 53-year-old opened up about Kavanaugh's alleged inappropriate behavior in an interview with Ronan Farrow for The New Yorker. Telling other Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee could risk outing Ford, who had asked that her identity be protected.

He suggested that the confirmation process needs to move ahead with the hearing as now scheduled for Thursday with a final committee vote "soon thereafter".

Benjamin Wittes, editor in chief of Harvard's Lawfare blog and someone who counts Kavanaugh as a personal friend, said as much in an article in The Atlantic. Ramirez asked that the FBI investigate her story saying, "At least look at it".

Kavanaugh now has to wrestle with the question of how capable he is in serving as a judge with these allegations, true or not, over his head.

'The fact that she took several days to carefully think about whether she wanted to cast herself into this storm is acknowledgment that there were gaps in her memory, which is often the case with experiences that involve alcohol, and this is not a woman that is behaving in a way that would suggests she has a agenda, or making something up, ' he said. But some of Ramirez's classmates vouch for her integrity and recall seeing Kavanaugh "frequently and incoherently drunk".

Still, the White House and Republicans have cast doubt on Ford's allegations.

Ramirez details a dorm-room party she attended at Yale, during which partygoers were drinking.

Kavanaugh was questioned by committee staff last week.
