Kavanaugh Accuser's Attorney Cancels Fundraiser for Democrat Senator

The Senate Judiciary Committee has been grappling with how to handle the accusation and is now engaged in negotiations with Ford's attorneys to set the terms under which she would be willing to testify in front of the committee by as early as next week.

"The Committee's stated plan to move forward with a hearing that has only two witnesses is not a fair or good faith investigation", said Lisa Banks, Ford's attorney. Now the party holds a slim 51 vote majority, raising the stakes for confirming Kavanaugh.

"Brett stood out as the most responsible guy who treated us with kindness and respect", said Megan McCaleb, a former classmate and longtime friend of Kavanaugh.

Taylor Foy, spokesman for Grassley, said: "We are happy that Dr. Ford's attorneys are now engaging with the Committee". "He remains committed to providing a fair forum for both Dr Ford and Judge Kavanaugh".

Chuck Grassley, the committee's Republican chairman, on Wednesday sent a letter to Ford's lawyers giving her until 10am (14:00 GMT) on Friday to submit prepared testimony if she meant to show up on Monday. Judge has told the committee he does not recall the incident and does not want to speak publicly.

In the call later Thursday, Katz asked the committee to subpoena Mark Judge, whom Ford has named as the other teen in the room at the time.

If Ford opts not to participate, Republicans could well dispense with the hearing to avoid giving Democrats a forum for peppering Kavanaugh with embarrassing questions. In earlier media interviews, Banks had said Ford would be willing to testify. So, it's unclear why the White House is ride or die on Brett Kavanaugh.

Twelve of Ford's family members wrote an open letter, posted on Twitter by her niece, actress and singer Bridgit Mendler, calling Ford "highly ethical" and saying "her honesty is above reproach". "I continue to want a hearing as soon as possible, so that I can clear my name". He defended Kavanaugh during the Las Vegas rally but insisted: 'I'm not saying anything about anybody else'.

Trump quickly followed that tweet with another one in which he questioned Ford's behavior and motives, mirroring the strategy used against Anita Hill decades ago. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said she considered the Republican ultimatum of a Monday hearing to be "bullying".

Ford, whose identity was unknown until Sunday, had sent a letter to Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in July. Ford wrote that Kavanaugh pushed her into a bedroom along with another male companion.

As the week has proceeded, Republicans have seemed to regain momentum toward approving Kavanaugh though his prospects have remained uncertain. Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona - said that unless Ford testified Monday they would move on to Kavanagh's vote.

Roberts had criticism for Democrats too, noting they are fooling no one with their histrionics.

"The most consequential decision I've made in my entire career is the decision not do something, and that was to not fill the vacancy after the death of Justice Scalia", McConnell said, referring the decision to hold up President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Vice President Mike Pence would break a tie.

Republicans still hope to have Kavanaugh confirmed before the high court begins its next session on October 1.
