How Ecuador, Russia Planned To Help Julian Assange Escape From UK

On Friday, it was revealed that Russian officials also deliberated over whether to help Mr Assange escape the embassy.

Officials accused the WikiLeaks founder, who has resided in Ecuador's London embassy since 2012, of "put at risk the good relations [Ecuador] maintains with the United Kingdom, with the other states of the European Union, and with other nations".

But Britain's Foreign Office in a 21 December note said it did not accept Assange as a diplomat and that it did not "consider that Mr Assange enjoys any type of privileges and immunities under the Vienna Convention", reads the letter, citing a British diplomatic note.

The "special designation" status awarded by the Ecuadorian president would allow Assange to hold diplomatic posts overseas even if the whistleblower is not career diplomat. "Julian Assange so that he can carry out functions at the Ecuadorean Embassy in Russian Federation, ".

In March, the Ecuadorian government disconnected Assange's internet access and barred him from receiving visitors for allegedly violating "a written commitment made to the government at the end of 2017 not to issue messages that might interfere with other states".

British authorities have said they will arrest Assange if he leaves the embassy, meaning he would have needed to be recognised as a diplomat in order to travel to Moscow. WikiLeaks website did not respond to an email seeking comment.

The persona of Julian Assange has become a thorn in Ecuador's president Lenin Moreno's side and, ever since assuming office in May of previous year, Moreno has made every effort to make sure the Australian's stay at Ecuador's embassy in London comes to an end as soon as possible.

"The Guardian" has now claimed that Russian officials were involved in a "basic" plan to extract the Wikileaks founder from the embassy on Christmas Eve a year ago and fly him to Russia.

The plan was ultimately deemed "too risky" and aborted, the report said.

US President Donald Trump faces an investigation into whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation to win that election. Two sources familiar with the inner workings of the Ecuadorian embassy said that Fidel Narváez, a close confidant of Assange who until recently served as Ecuador's London consul, had served as a point of contact with Moscow. Assange denies receiving the emails from Russian Federation, but has not ruled out having obtained them from a third party.

The Ecuadorian President has said Mr Assange can not remain in asylum for life.
