GOP Swing Vote Collins 'Appalled' at Trump Tweet Needling Ford

Democrat Says 'Boo Hoo' To Rape Threats Against Sen. Collins's Staff

Kavanaugh has denied the allegation and pledged to testify at Monday's hearing.

The accusation has jarred the 53-year-old conservative jurist's prospects for winning confirmation, which until Professor Ford's emergence last week had seemed all but certain.

"Otherwise, there are these very serious allegations hanging over the head of a nominee who has emphatically denied them", she said on radio WVOM in Bangor.

Her suggestions include: input from experts in sexual violence to guide procedure and questioning of witnesses, investigation of allegations by a "neutral" body with experience in sexual misconduct, and a commitment to not rush the process.

Ford has said she didn't tell anyone at the time about the incident.

The woman's attorneys called the date set by Republicans "arbitrary", according to multiple United States news reports.

The GOP is defending House and Senate majorities in the election, and though Trump is not on the ballot November 6, the contest is widely considered a referendum on his stewardship.

CNN reported earlier Thursday that Trump has bragged about the positive coverage he's received for his handling of Kavanaugh's accuser, according to multiple sources.

"Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man", he added, "with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians".

"She wishes to testify, provided that we can agree on terms that are fair and which ensure her safety", Katz wrote in an email.

Ford now wants it to be shifted to later in the week, and has sought, through her attorney, a guarantee for her security.

In a separate letter to Democrats, Mr Grassley wrote that committee aides were "even willing to fly to California, or anywhere else, to meet her".

To a room filled with conservative evangelicals, Kavanaugh is a like-minded defender of their shared values.

"I have never done anything like what the accuser describes - to her or to anyone", he said in a statement Monday.

Committee Republicans have planned for only Kavanaugh and Ford to testify, but Democrats want other witnesses, too.

Another person asking for leads from the alumnae page claimed to be in touch with the Washington Post and other newspapers, wanting to talk with individuals "who want to support Dr. Ford".

In a letter to Prof Ford's legal team, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said "it is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this".

The Senate panel must approve Kavanaugh's confirmation before a vote by the full Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 majority.

Taylor Foy, spokesman for Republicans on the panel, said that Grassley "will consult with his colleagues on the committee". The Committee will take Dr. Ford's and Judge Kavanaugh's testimony on Wednesday, September 26.

At a party, Kavanaugh and a friend, who she has alleged were both "stumbling drunk", forced her into a room.

By refusing to call Mark Judge as a witness, and refusing to direct the FBI to investigate, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the president are in lockstep.

Kavanaugh, meanwhile, has said he is ready to appear on Monday (Tuesday NZT). He was at the White House on Thursday for the fourth consecutive day, as he prepares for possible testimony.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted in reply to Trump that sexual assault and domestic violence are two "of the most under-reported crimes in society, this is a fact & in the past the law enforcement community has not done a good job of creating safe spaces for victims". "Why didn't someone call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?" he added. "They've delayed it a week already. they have to get on with it".

Republicans have resisted all Democratic efforts to slow and perhaps block Kavanaugh's confirmation.
