Study Shows This Scent Can Stimulate Hair Growth

It turns out that hair follicles are thought to contain 'smell receptors' that respond to the aromatic odour and trigger the main protein in hair to multiply

Researchers believe that hair follicles are thought to contain "smell receptors" that react to the aroma.

Although it may seem odd that scent receptors are present in hair follicles, such receptors are actually ancient chemical signalling systems that evolved before humans developed a sense of smell.

According to a new study, a chemical created to mimic the smell of sandalwood also has the power to stimulate hair growth in humans.

"This is actually a rather wonderful finding", coauthor Ralf Paus of the University of Manchester tells The Independent "This is the first time ever that it has been shown that the remodelling of a normal human mini-organ [a hair] can be regulated by a simple, cosmetically widely-used odorant".

Florence: Two patients dead after van swept away in floods
The president then promised to find out the name of the insurance company, without further detailing what he would do afterward. The death toll in the aftermath of Florence reached 37 as of Wednesday, according to the Associated Press .

"This is the first time ever that it has been shown that the remodelling of a normal human mini-organ [a hair] can be regulated by a simple, cosmetically widely-used odoran", he said.

As part of the study, they exposed the human scalp to artificial sandalwood-like odour called Sandalore, which is often added to cosmetics and perfumes. The team noted that this odorant chemical stimulates special cells within the nose. This receptor was found in the outer layers of the hair follicles. That's because unlike Sandalore, Phenirat is an OR2AT4 blocker. The results were clinically significant say the researchers. Scalp tissues were taken for this study from patients undergoing a face lift surgery.

Six days after the tissue was exposed to Sandalore, its keratin levels began to increase. Paus explained that this was followed by a "very small, short and preliminary clinical pilot study" with just 20 female volunteers who were given Sandalore to be applied over their scalp.

With a larger scale of research to work with and professionally controlled clinical trials now under way, scientists hope to see results as early as the beginning of 2019.
