Google partners with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi to bring Android to cars

Inside Nissan's'brain-to-vehicle lab

This operation is scheduled to start in 2021.

Android fans rejoice! The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has just signed a multi-year deal with Google that'll have the global tech giant producing "intelligent infotainment systems" for the three vehicle manufacturers starting in 2021.

By selecting Android as the future of its infotainment, popular features like Google Maps, the Google Play app store, and voice-control functions via Google Assistant will be embedded in the system.

The partnership will also give Google access to even more personal data, though Kal Mos, the Alliance's VP of connected vehicles, told the WSJ that Google will need to get drivers' permission before collecting that data. The plan also involves the launch of 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles, new autonomous-driving technologies and the ongoing rollout of the Alliance Intelligent Cloud.

Each brand will have a unique interface and specific features and will offer integrated cloud-based systems as well.

The Spain global started up front for Chelsea in the Europa League Group L win but was poor. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is hopeful that Pedro has NOT suffered a serious injury.

Hadi Zablit, senior vice president of business development at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, said that this partnership with Google will offer owners of its vehicles rich user experiences that are now available only outside the vehicle or, to a limited extent, by connecting an Android device to supported vehicles. Alliance Intelligent Cloud will provide next-gen infotainment systems with secure connectivity and will facilitate over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics.

In a press release sent out yesterday, the carmakers announced that many of its markets will offer vehicles that will come equipped with the Android operating system.

Drivers and passengers will be able to leverage Google and Android's capabilities to access an ecosystem that includes thousands of existing applications and an ever-expanding array of new apps, it added.

Not only will Android run infotainment, but the alliance will also integrate the operating system with its cloud-based systems.

The company announced that Assistant support has begun rolling out to Android TV and Android Auto in Australia from this week, so expect to see both apps update with voice support in the coming days - whether it's in your vehicle, on your Android smartphone, or on your TV.
