Woman in serious condition after shark attack off Whitsunday Island

Now she is fighting for life in a Mackay hospital, having been dragged from the water by her husband and other terrified tourists after a horrifying shark attack on Wednesday afternoon.

Queensland Ambulance Service Mackay manager of operations Tracey Eastwick told ABC she was very fortunate to have a doctor on the scene.

The Brisbane Times reports that the woman, 46, suffered significant injuries when she was attacked where she was swimming near a yacht in Cid Harbour, just off Whitsunday Island on Wednesday around 5pm.

It is unknown at this stage what age or gender the child is.

Queensland Ambulance also confirmed the young girl, who was in a critical condition, was being transported to nearby Mackay Hospital by helicopter.
