Trump to declassify documents on Russian Federation investigation

"The Democrats know it's a witch hunt, too, but they don't want to admit it because that's not good politics for them".

In a highly unusual move, the White House announced on Monday afternoon that the president had directed the justice department and Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, to publish material that was being kept secret.

Various U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA, National Security Agency and FBI, have investigated him for alleged contact he had with Russian officials under U.S. sanctions.

The president's conservative allies had this month appealed directly to the president to release the materials, and they praised Trump's directive as a win for transparency.

Democrats in the House believe this is just another attempt by President Trump to selectively release documents which will strengthen his own defense in the Special Counsel investigation.

A Justice Department statement issued Monday evening suggested that the declassification was not a done deal, but that DOJ would try to comply with the president's order while reviewing for any potential harm.

On Monday President Trump ordered intelligence agencies to declassify a mountain of Russian Federation documents and texts, including documents regarding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant on Carter Page and texts from key players in the Russian Federation investigation.

The president also did not order the declassification of a subsequent part of the document that details information Page provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation during an earlier interview, or sections that go over Russia's attempts to recruit New York City residents as intelligence assets.

Air Force Must Rebuild to Cold War-Era Size to Confront China
The US Air Force had 401 squadrons in 1987, at the peak of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The secretary said the Air Force is more prepared for major combat operations today than it was two years ago.

"This is certainly unprecedented", said Robert Litt, the former general counsel of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence during the Obama administration.

"The President shouldn't be declassifying documents in order to undermine an investigation into his campaign or pursue vendettas against political enemies", Warner said.

The FBI earlier released in heavily redacted format 412 pages of surveillance applications and court orders related to Page.

They also appear to concern a dossier of unverified information on Russian financial and personal links to Trump and his associates that was compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele.

Nellie Ohr, his wife, worked for Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that was hired to create the dossier. "We're on the verge of having the president do more declassification".

"President Trump, in a clear abuse of power, has chose to intervene in a pending law enforcement investigation by ordering the selective release of materials he believes are helpful to his defense team and thinks will advance a false narrative", Rep.

Trump "cares about nothing about the country and everything about his narrow self-interest", Schiff added. His communications were monitored for almost a year starting in October 2016. Page has since left the bureau and Strzok was sacked earlier this year by the FBI for his actions during the investigation; including moments where they discussed communications with the media and published stories, they considered using as a "pretext" to conduct more interviews of Trump campaign personnel.
