SpaceX Says Passenger Booked to Circle Moon on Big Falcon Rocket

SpaceX books private passenger flight around the Moon

When the trip goes ahead, it will be the first time someone has traveled as far as the moon since NASA's Apollo missions in the late '60s and early '70s, and also the furthest into space that a private passenger has ever traveled. This lunar mission - a flyby, not a landing - represents "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space", SpaceX said in a tweet.

The tourist will fly in the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) being created to carry people into deep space, the Elon Musk led company said in a tweet.

SpaceX gave no further details, but said more information would follow on Monday.

SpaceX is ready to send the world's first private space passenger around the moon.

Musk announced in February 2017 that his company had enlisted two private citizens to fly on a trip around the Moon in 2018.

Hurricane Florence weakens - but still dangerous
He said all the calls for reservations were coming from either SC and North Carolina where the damage is supposed to be the worst. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday, adding that life-threatening storm surge and rainfall were still expected.

The 31-engine BFR is part of the company's grand plan for travelling between planets, and will replace its current suite of rockets like the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. Plans for that flight were eventually delayed; it's unclear if one of the two passengers from that flight will be taking the trip on the BFR.

SpaceX now has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to supply the astronauts living at the ISS, via regular cargo trips on its Dragon spaceship, launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

On Twitter, a user asked SpaceX CEO Elon Musk if he was the person in question.

"All our resources will turn toward building BFR", Musk said past year, reported the Verge.

"I feel fairly confident that we can complete the ship and launch in about five years", Musk said.
