Sydney Thunder snap up Root, Buttler for Big Bash League

Root and Buttler will spend a fortnight in Australia over Christmas and New Year playing for Sydney Thunder

England's Test captain Joe Root and vice-captain Jos Buttler have signed up for Sydney Thunder for the upcoming season Big Bash League (BBL), Australia's domestic T20 competition. He has played less than 20 T20 games in the last two years due to his national commitments specially in Test side.

Root expressed his excitement over the deal as he said he wants to gain as much experience as possible.

.

"I'm sure there will be some mixed emotions for the fans (with me signing) but hopefully I can win them over through the time there. And help Sydney Thunder go on and do some special things this year", he added.

"Everyone you speak to that has played in the Big Bash finds it a really interesting tournament and watching it you can see that", Root told reporters on Friday.

The agreement sees Buttler, who hit maiden Test century at Trent Bridge against India, returning to the team for which he played six matches last season and has penned down a two-year contract.

Root will link up again with Shane Bond, the former New Zealand bowler who is Thunder's head coach.

Buttler is regarded as one of the finest T20 players in the world and this will be his second stint with Thunder.
