Fernando Alonso crashed out on the opening lap of the Belgian GP

There was a major crash at the first turn of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, as Fernando Alonso's McLaren vehicle went flying when hit from behind by Renault's Nico Hulkenberg.

Alonso's McLaren was sent flying over Charles Leclerc's Sauber, and in the process he tagged and wrecked Daniel Ricciardo's rear wing, with the Red Bull driver subsequently puncturing a tyre on Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari.

Away from the racetrack, 2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg was one of several former F1 drivers who took to Twitter to praise the system following the accident, writing: "We can end the HALO discussion now".

"Yet again a very big-time missed braking point", Alonso told BBC Radio Five Live after the crash.

Afghanistan president rejects resignation of three top security officials
It was not clear, though, whether Kabul's decision to decline the Russian invitation had anything to do with Atmar's resignation. Afghan government officials were not immediately available to confirm the reported presidential directive.

Grosjean was fined and handed a one-race ban as a result.

"It is tough to understand how you can miss the braking so much", he added of Hulkenberg's actions. "You arrive at a speed where it's impossible to negotiate the corner".

As the carnage was cleared, Alonso, Leclerc, Hulkenberg and Ricciardo were left with the most most-damaged cars. "It's a good proof", said Alonso. But on the positive side we are all OK; also Charles with the Halo, good news that we all three are OK.

"When I hit the brakes obviously I instantly locked up the front wheels and then just sliding into Fernando. I think for him, it helped, looking at the replay", commented the Spaniard. I was definitely happier that I had the halo. We didn't need any proof but it's a good thing.
