Democrats strip superdelegates of role choosing 2020 candidate

DNC-082418-3

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Saturday congratulated the DNC for approving a measure that will greatly curtail that influence going forward.

The move will prohibit nearly 700 unpledged party leaders, elected officials and activists from voting for presidential nominee during the DNC's 2020 convention, unless the candidate already has a secured majority.

It is a historic change, upending a process that has been in place for decades.

The news network also added that caucuses would be accepting absentee ballots, whereas the old rules stated you needed to vote in person to participate.

She started with some history. And had Obama not won the first caucus in Iowa, he might have never gotten enough momentum to win the nomination. The decision gives even more weight to the outcome of state primaries and caucuses.

The new rules are a big victory for Sanders, who lost the party's contentious nomination battle to Hillary Clinton in 2016, but thanks to his newfound popularity and passionate base, now exerts considerable influence over the direction of the party.

Beyond changing the rules for superdelegates, the overhaul is meant to make vote-counting at presidential preference caucuses more transparent and make it easier for voters other than longtime registered Democrats to participate in caucuses and primaries.

"Today we demonstrated the values of the Democratic Party", DNC Chairman Tom Perez said after the vote.

Regardless, all of the bad blood went by the wayside in the past few weeks as Berniecrats joined forces with Perez to defeat a rump group of DNC veterans opposed to superdelegate reforms of any kind.

Ditching the superdelegate system may be good for party unity but it may lead to the nomination of someone who couldn't possibly win the general election in 2020. They're the hundreds of DNC members, elected officials and party elders who attend presidential conventions as automatic delegates. Coming ahead of November's crucial midterms, the move also signals the Democrats' increasing reliance on young progressive voters who they hope will turn out in unprecedented numbers this fall.

Another former DNC chair, Howard Dean, wholeheartedly endorsed the changes in a video played at the meeting.

Despite not being allowed to weigh in on the initial round of voting, the new rule does permit superdelegates to vote if the nomination process enters a second round.

Trusting the Democratic party's electorate over its elites was a common theme among the reformers' pitches in Chicago.

In October, Perez removed Ellison allies from key DNC committees, provoking a bitter spat at the DNC's fall meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.
